The name Tyrnhaw combines the historical German name for Trnava — Tyrnau — with haw (a cut, from German fencing terminology). What started as a HEMA weekend in 2011 has grown into an annual tournament held every autumn since 2015.
Organized by Trnavský šermiarsky cech (Trnava Fencing Guild) under the supervision of the Slovak HEMA Federation (FEBUS), competitors fight for the laurel wreath and a place on the Tyrnhaw Steel Wheel of Fame.
